Overview

Redesigned a mobile-first ILT (Instructor-Led Training) registration experience for SumTotal, a workplace LMS — replacing a confusing multi-step flow with one built around progressive disclosure, without disrupting how existing users already registered for training. New joiners and sales teams were the primary users struggling with mobile registration, which was dragging down completion rates and program engagement.

Problem statement

Users want to register for ILT courses with clarity and confidence — without navigating a maze. New joiners and sales teams in particular were dropping off during mobile registration, hurting both completion rates and overall program engagement.

Research & discovery

Support tickets and analytics pointed to a high dropout rate driven by confusion between 'Register Later' and 'Blocked' eligibility states on the registration page.

Mobile sessions had the highest bounce rate of any ILT content on the platform — the existing registration flow hadn't been designed mobile-first.

Benchmarked LinkedIn Learning and Coursera's registration and on-demand enrollment flows, then defined a 'Fresher' persona to represent the new-joiner registration journey specifically.

Design decisions

Problem

Confusing multi-step registration with unclear 'Register Later' vs 'Blocked' states.

Solution

Introduced progressive disclosure — breaking registration into five clear steps instead of one dense page — so eligibility state only surfaces when it's relevant to the user.

Problem

The business needed registration logic that was scalable and reusable across future courses, while QA was concerned complex rule-based eligibility logic would break on mobile.

Solution

Worked directly with PMs and QA to define eligibility rules upfront, then built the flow around a reusable registration pattern instead of one-off logic per course.

Problem

Mobile had the highest bounce rate for ILT content on the entire platform.

Solution

Designed mobile-first starting from paper prototypes, validating each of the five registration steps against the 'Fresher' persona before moving to high-fidelity screens in Figma.
